Thunder softball splits a CCIW twinbill with Elmhurst

The Wheaton Thunder softball team split a CCIW doubleheader with Elmhurst College on Thursday afternoon in the home finale of the 2013 season for Wheaton. The Thunder rallied to defeat Elmhurst 7-6 in the first game and Elmhurst was a 7-5 victor in the nightcap. Wheaton improves to 17-14 overall and 5-7 in CCIW play. The Thunder will wrap up the regular season in a doubleheader on Saturday at Illinois Wesleyan.

Wheaton won today's opener 7-6 as the Thunder scored seven runs, on 13 hits, with one error and Elmhurst scored six runs, on seven hits, with two errors. Thunder starting pitcher Katie Thornton worked five innings, allowing five runs, including three runs, on four hits, with four walks and six strikeouts. Lyndsey Pritchard tossed one inning of relief, allowing one run, on three hits, with one walk. Danielle Schmidt earned the win in one inning of relief. Schmidt held the Bluejays scoreless, with no hits and two strikeouts.
 
Jessica Goeke went 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored. Thunder freshman Christina Sandstedt (PICTURED LEFT) was 2-for-3, with four RBI and a run scored. Katie Yergler was 2-for-3, with a walk and three runs scored. Suzanne Teuben was 2-for-3 with a RBI. Alyssa Leonard went 2-for-3, with a pair of runs.
 
Wheaton took a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI groundout by Sandstedt. The Thunder added three runs in the bottom of a second inning that was highlighted by a two-run single from Sandstedt and a RBI-single by Goeke. Elmhurst responded with three runs in the top of the fourth inning to cut Wheaton's lead to 4-3. The Bluejays added two runs in the top of the fifth inning and another in the sixth inning give the guests a 6-4 lead.

Wheaton tied the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the sixth inning with a RBI-double to right field by Sandstedt and RBI-single by Teuben. Leonard drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning and she scored two batters later on a RBI-single by Shannah Morris to win the game for the Thunder.    
 
Elmhurst topped Wheaton 7-5 in the second game as the Bluejays scored seven runs, on 15 hits, with two errors and Wheaton tallied five runs, on 10 hits, with two errors. Schmidt (11-6) took the loss in six innings of action. She allowed seven runs, including five earned runs, on 15 hits, with five strikeouts. Leonard was 3-for-3 with a run scored to lead the Thunder effort. Teuben continued her strong play going 2-for-3, with two RBI and a run scored. Katie Yergler (PICTURED RIGHT) was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
 
Wheaton scored two runs in the top of the second inning that saw Teuben hit a leadoff double and Schmidt drive in a run in the inning. Elmhurst plated three runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 3-2 lead. In the top of the third inning Sandstedt hit a two-out single and she scored on the next at bat thanks to a well-hit double by Teuben. Elmhurst regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the third inning to give the Bluejays a 5-3 lead. Wheaton tied the game at 5-5 with two runs in the top of the fifth inning as Yergler scored on a steal of home and Teuben drove in the tying run on a sacrifice fly. Elmhurst took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to account for the Bluejays' 7-5 win.
