Thunder softball splits a doubleheader at Univ. of Chicago

The Wheaton Thunder softball team played a non-conference doubleheader at University of Chicago on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons defeated the Thunder 4-0 in the first game and Wheaton responded with a 3-2 win in the second game. Wheaton will host North Central College on Monday afternoon at 3 PM in a CCIW doubleheader that was originally scheduled for Thursday April 18.

Chicago earned a 4-0 win in game one as the Maroons scored four runs, on nine hits, with no errors and Wheaton had no runs, on eight hits, with no errors. Thunder starting pitcher Katie Thornton (5-6) took the loss in four innings as she allowed three runs, on six hits, with four walks and three strikeouts. Lyndsey Pritchard worked two innings of relief, with one run, on three hits.

Alyssa Leonard (PICTURED LEFT) was 2-for-3 for Wheaton in the opening contest. Chicago took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Maroons added a run in the bottom of the fourth inning and another in the bottom of the fifth to account for the 4-0 final score.

Wheaton scored the win in today's nightcap, with three runs, on six hits and one error, while Chicago tallied two runs, on nine hits, with one error. Senior starting pitcher Danielle Schmidt (9-5) earned the win in seven innings. She allowed two runs, on nine hits, with three walks and seven strikeouts. Christina Sandstedt was 2-for-3, with a home run, two runs scored and two RBI.

Wheaton jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to a two-run home run by Christina Sandstedt. Chicago plated a run in the bottom of the third inning and added another in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 2-2. In the top of the sixth inning, Sandstedt hit a leadoff single and scored three batters later on a game-winning RBI-single by Alyssa Leonard.
