Thunder softball team splits a pair in its final day of action in Florida

The Thunder softball team concluded its week-long participation in the Gene Cusic Classic on Friday, splitting a pair of games. Wheaton defeated UW-Superior 3-0 and lost the final game of the trip 2-0 against Delaware Valley. Wheaton is now 7-1 on the year and is scheduled to host Concordia University-Chicago on Tuesday at 3 PM on Ruth Leedy Field.

Thunder head coach Katie East said of her team's 7-1 performance this week, "I was very impressed with the performance of our newcomers and proud of the leadership of our returners this week. We had a very strong defense and did a great job hitting and being aggressive this week. It was such a wonderful week watching the team come together and grow both on and off of the field."

In the 3-0 win against UW-Superior, the Thunder scored three runs, on six hits, with two errors and UW-Superior was held scoreless on three hits, with four errors. Senior starting pitcher Danielle Schmidt (4-0) earned the complete game victory in seven innings of work. She struck out 10 batters, with no walks allowed and she scattered three hits.

Wheaton took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning thanks to a RBI-double by Ellen Radandt Jessica Goeke increased Wheaton's lead to 2-0 in the third inning when she hit a two-out double, stole base and scored on an error on the very next at-bat. In the fifth inning, Katie Yergler hit a one-out single, stole second and scored on a RBI-single by Christina Sandstedt to give the Thunder the 3-0 lead that would become the final score. Shannah Morris was 2-for-3 in the game with a double.

Delaware Valley shut out Wheaton 2-0 in the final game of the week for the Thunder. Delaware Valley scored two runs, on four hits, with no errors and Wheaton was scoreless, with five hits and two errors. Freshman starting pitcher (2-1) Katie Thornton pitched seven innings, allowing two runs, one earned run, on four hits, with nine strikeouts. Senior Suzanne Teuben was 2-for-3 to lead Wheaton's offensive effort in the game.
