Chicago, Ill.- Struggling with turnovers (23), the Thunder rode a strong defensive effort to a 48-32 road victory at North Park on Wednesday night. Trailing 19-18 at halftime, Wheaton held the Vikings to just 4-31 (12.9%) shooting from the floor in the second half and pulled away to win their fifth straight game. CCIW Player of the Week
Breanna Bohlen was the only player to score in double figures, tallying 16 points and leading Wheaton to an 18-3 record and a 9-2 conference mark.
Wheaton shot 19-46 (41.3%) from the field, but just 4-14 (28.6%) from the three-point line and also struggled at the free throw line, turning in a 6-14 (42.9%) performance. The Vikings were held to 11-56 (19.6%) shooting and hit just three of 19 (15.8%) three-point attempts. North Park was 7-15 (46.7%) from the charity stripe.
Wheaton led the game for much of the first half, leading by as many as seven points on two occasions. However, the Vikings were able to tie the game in the final minutes and a late lay-up by Dominikque Williams with eight seconds left, gave North Park a 19-18 lead at the half.
In the second half, the Vikings were held for the first three minutes and 51 seconds of the second half while Wheaton built a six-point lead that they would not surrender. Wheaton held North Park to just 13 second half points and led by as many as 18 points en route to a 48-32 victory.
Bohlen's 16 points was followed by a six-point, nine-rebound effort by both
Maris Hovee and
Maria Panaggio.
Jenn Lee also grabbed nine rebounds for the Thunder.
Shaina Yalda led the Vikings (13-9, 4-7) with eight points.
Wheaton will travel to Millikin University on Saturday to take on the Big Blue in a contest schedule to start at 2 PM.
