Wooster, Ohio- The Wheaton men's basketball team rallied from a 15-point second half deficit, but ultimately couldn't could not overcome the Fighting Scots of Wooster College in a 77-73 loss in the Championship game of the Al Van Rie/Wooster Rotary Classic on Saturday. Fifth-ranked Wheaton is now 3-2, while the College of Wooster, ranked eighth by D3hoops.com, improves to 3-0.
Both teams put on an impressive offensive performance. Wooster shot 27-of-59 (45.8%) from the field, but was 13-of-23 (56.5%) from the three-point line and 10-of-15 (66.7%) from the free throw line. Wheaton shot 25-of-44 (56.8%) from the field and an even 50% (8-16) from the three-point line, while hitting 15-of-20 (75%) at the free throw line.
The first half of Saturday night's game provided an offensive showcase on both ends of the floor as the teams traded baskets in a wide open game. Neither team could push the lead past six points and the half featured six ties and four lead changed.
Wheaton was able to hold the lead for much of the first half after trailing for the opening seven minutes. A
Tyler Peters three-point play with 12:06 left in the first half started an 8-0 Thunder run that gave Wheaton its first lead of the night and also extended the lead to 21-15 with 11:07 remaining the first half. Peters (PICTURED LEFT) scored 15 of his 19 points in the first half. The Fighting Scots worked the lead back down and regained the lead with 2:45 left in the half and held on for a 44-41 halftime advantage.
Wooster then opened the second half on a 15-3 run in the opening four minutes to take the game's biggest lead at 59-44. Back-to-back three-pointers by
Michael Kvam put an end to the run and ignited the Thunder comeback. Trailing 64-57 with 7:45 remaining, another Kvam three, a
Brayden Teuscher jumper and a three-point play by
Nate Haynes (PICTURED RIGHT) comprised an 8-0 Wheaton run to retake the lead at 65-64 with 6:21 remaining.
Wooster's Xavier Brown answered with a three to put the Fighting Scots back on top. Teuscher tied the game again with a driving lay-in, but a quick 5-0 Wooster run put Wheaton back in a 72-67 hole. A pair of technical foul free throws and and two more free throws by
Tyler Peters cut the lead to one at 72-71, but once again Wooster answered with a deep ball. Doug Thorpe connected on one of his five three-pointers to give Wooster a four-point lead. The Fighting Scots held on for the 77-73 victory.
Nate Haynes followed his outstanding night against Spalding with a 12-point, seven-rebound performance.
Tyler Peters led the Thunder with 19 points and seven rebounds.
Michael Kvam scored 14 and
Brayden Teuscher poured in 12 points.
Haynes was named the Tournament's Defensive MVP and Peters was also named to the All-Tournament Team.
Wheaton will have the upcoming week off before it hosts the University of Chicago on December 4.
