San Antonio, Texas – The Wheaton College women's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory against Emory University in the second overtime of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament Sectional Semifinal match on Friday night. Wheaton is now 21-1-2 on the year, while Emory concludes its season 16-4-1.
Wheaton advances to Saturday's Sectional Final against host Trinity University (Texas) at 5 PM. The winner of Saturday's contest between the Thunder and will advance to the Division III National Semifinal on Dec. 6 at
Toyota Field in San Antonio. Trinity (23-0-2) advanced to Saturday's match with a 2-1 win against Montclair State University (20-1-1) earlier tonight.
Alexa Sharkey scored the game-winner just two minutes into the second overtime to give Wheaton the win. Sharkey's second goal of the year gave Wheaton the win. Sharkey dribbled the ball down the middle of the field to the right corner of the 18-yard box. She setup for a shot that hit the far post and ricocheted into the net to send Wheaton to the fourth round of the tournament for the third consecutive year.
Wheaton controlled pace of play through much of the match. The Thunder out-shot the Eagles 10-5 in the first half, with a 3-1 edge in shots on goal. Wheaton owned an 11-5 advantage in the second half, with a 4-1 margin for the Thunder in shots on goal. Emory took three shots in the first overtime, while Wheaton had none. The Eagles attempted the only shot on goal in the opening overtime. Sharkey's game-winner was Wheaton's second shot in the final overtime period.
Wheaton out-shot the Eagles 23-13 in the match, with an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal. Wheaton attempted seven corner kicks and Emory was awarded three. Thunder goalkeeper
