Aurora, Ill.- The Wheaton women's basketball team improved to 2-1 this season with a 74-46 win at Aurora University on Tuesday night. The Thunder raced out to a 9-0 lead and never looked back in building a 42-13 halftime lead before coasting to the finish line in the second half. Wheaton is now 31-5 all-time against the Spartans, who fall to 0-2 this season with the loss.
Wheaton shot a season-high 49.1% (28-57) from the field and 41.2% (7-17) from the three-point line, with a 37.9% (11-29) mark from the free throw line. Aurora was held to 24.1% (14-58) from the field and 6-of-24 (25%) from the three-point line. The Spartans shot 12-of-17 (70.6%) from the charity stripe.
The Thunder jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead in the opening two-and-a-half minutes behind two jumpers by
Hannah Considine, a lay-up by
Maris Hovee and an
Ellie Zeller three-pointer. Another 9-0 run followed Aurora's first basket to give Wheaton an 18-2 lead. Following a Spartan three-pointer that made it 18-5, the Thunder reeled off a 19-0 run that held the Spartans without a basket for a nine-minute stretch, while building a 37-5 lead en route to a 42-13 halftime lead.
Wheaton built the lead to as many as 39 points in the second half when
Abby Dorman hit a three-pointer with 6:59 left in the game but did not allow the Spartans to get any closer than the final deficit of 74-46.
Hannah Considine scored 11 of her game-high 17 points in the second half. Considine also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
Katie McDaniels finished with 12 points after leading Wheaton with nine first half points.
Ellie Zeller scored nine points with four assists and
Sarah Drury (PICTURED RIGHT) scored eight points to go with eight rebounds.
Wheaton will return for Friday night's home opener against Whittier College as part of the Beth Baker Classic at 7:00 PM.
