GAME STATS PICTURED ABOVE: Anna Seabolt scored Wheaton's only goal in a 1-1 tie at University of Chicago on Wednesday.
Chicago, Ill.- Despite an enormous advantage in shots and possession, a strong individual effort was able to balance the playing field and stymied the Thunder attack on Wednesday afternoon. University of Chicago's Jacinda Reid made 18 saves to help nullify a 27-9 shot advantage for Wheaton as the teams played to a 1-1 draw. Five of Reid's saves came in the two overtime periods including a diving stop in the final seconds of the first overtime. Wheaton is now 11-0-1 on the season while the Maroons are 7-2-2.
The Maroons landed the first blow early on in the match on an unassisted goal from Micaela Harms at the 6:58 mark to put Chicago up 1-0. Wheaton started to turn the field immediately after the goal and outshot the Maroons 12-1 for the remainder of the half but could not find the back of the net with Reid making nine saves, alloing Chicago to hold a 1-0 halftime lead.
Mary Daghfal made seven saves in the match and allowed just the one goal.
Wheaton continued to dominate the possession but it wasn't until the later parts of the game where the Thunder started to overwhelm the Chicago backline. Coming off the bench,
Anna Seabolt provided the spark for the Thunder with a low shot to the left corner of the net that beat Reid to the score at 1-1 at the 67:59 mark. Wheaton had several good chances in the final ten minutes of the half but all were turned aside.
In the first overtime, it was the Maroons that found the first threatening opportunity when the ball skipped free on a centering pass through the middle of the box. Chicago was unable to get on the receiving end of the pass and ball rolled harmlessly through the box. Wheaton was awarded a free kick just outside the top of the box in the final minute of the first overtime but the shot by
Annie Wooldridge sailed high. In the final seconds,
Leah DeMoss was denied on a diving save by Reid to send the game to a second overtime period.
The Thunder almost found the game-winner in the 102nd minute but a diving save by Reid denied
Sydney Sharkey (PICTURED RIGHT) and Reid then somehow was able to block Seabolt's rebound attempt wide to force a corner kick. That would be the only true threat of the second overtime as the teams settled for a 1-1 draw.
The Thunder will continue their CCIW schedule on Friday night when they travel to Langhorst Field to take on the Elmhurst Bluejays at 7 PM.
