Elmhurst, Ill.- The eighth-ranked Thunder men' soccer team played to a scoreless draw on Saturday night against the Elmhurst Bluejays. Despite a lopsided shot advantage (24-7) and possession edge, Wheaton could not find a way to put the ball in the back of the net and earned their first draw of the season. The tie snaps a four-game winning streak for the Thunder and moves Wheaton to 9-3-1 on the season and 2-0-1 in the CCIW. Elmhurst moves to 8-2-2 overall and 1-0-1 in CCIW play.
Wheaton's best chance came in the 16th minute when a header by
Jordan Golz hit the crossbar off a corner kick but bounced straight down without crossing the goal line and was scooped up by Elmhurst keeper John Reglin. Reglin recorded seven saves in the match.
Elmhurst answered quickly with its best opportunity of the match just a couple minutes later when
Derek Babb used a full extension dive to thwart an attempt from Michael DeLong. Babb made three saves of his own in the match.
Wheaton owned a 6-1 advantage in shots during the overtime periods. Halfway through the first overtime,
Stephen Golz found space for a bending left foot by Reglin was up for the challenge and elevated to make the save.
Wheaton returns to Joe Bean Stadium on Wednesday night when they host the University of Wisconsin-Platteville at 7 PM. Wheaton will travel to Benedictine on Thursday night to play the Eagles in a match that was postponed due to lightning on September 18.
