Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton Thunder men's basketball team dropped its CCIW opener with an 83-80 loss at home to #25-Illinois Wesleyan (9-3/1-0 CCIW) on Wednesday night. Wheaton falls to 10-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play. Wheaton, ranked eighth in this week's D3hoops.com Top-25 poll, will travel to top-ranked North Central College on Saturday for a 7 PM tipoff against the Cardinals.
Wheaton shot 45% (27-60) from the field, with 33.3% (7-21) from three-point range and 65.5% (19-29) at the free throw line. Illinois Wesleyan posted a 43.3% (26-60) field goal percentage with 36.4% (4-11) from behind the three-point arc and 67.5% (27-40) at the charity stripe. The Titans out-rebounded the Thunder 50-32, including a 13-3 edge on the offensive glass.
Brady Zimmer led the Titans with 20 points on 6-for-8 shooting from the field and three assists. Pat Sodemann scored 18 points. Victor Davis tallied 13 points, with eight rebounds. Kevin Reed scored nine points with seven rebounds and Andrew Ziemnik scored seven points with eight rebounds. Dylan Overstreet contributed eight points, with seven rebounds and three assists.
The contest was tied at 9-9 just four minutes into the game when the Titans scored nine un-answered points to take an 18-9 lead. The largest IWU lead of the first half was the 19-point advantage in the Titans' 45-26 lead at halftime.
Illinois Wesleyan increased its lead early in the second half as the Titans held a 23-point bulge, the largest of the game, at 57-34 with 14:45 remaining in the game. Wheaton went on a 13-4 run that cut the guests lead to 61-47 with 9:10 left in the contest.
The Titans led 78-68 with 45-seconds left in the game when Teuscher drained a three-pointer and the Titans went 1-for-2 at the charity stripe and then Peters tallied a layup to trim the IWU lead to 79-73 with 34-seconds left in the game. IWU made a pair of free throws to increase its lead to eight points, but
Caleb DeMoss drained a three-pointer to cut the Titans' lead to 81-76 with 26-seconds remaining. The Titans went 2-for-2 at the charity stripe to build its lead to 83-76, but a free throw by Teuscher was followed by a
Peter Smith three-pointer to trim the guests lead to 83-80 with six seconds left. The Titans in-bounded the ball and prevented Wheaton from committing a foul to run out the clock and secure the conference win.
