#24-Whitworth tops seventh-ranked Thunder men's soccer team, 1-0

GAME STATS Spokane, Wash. – The Wheaton men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 contest at Whitworth University on Saturday afternoon in a battle of nationally ranked teams. Today's match was the final match for Wheaton at the Whitworth Soccer Classic. The Thunder will return to action on Tuesday for a 4 PM match at University of Chicago.

Wheaton, ranked seventh in this week's NSCAA Division III Cacohes Poll, is now 3-1-0. Whitworth, ranked 24th in the same poll, improves to 3-0-1 on the year.

Whitworth's Mike Chavez broke a scoreless tie in the 34th minute when he scored on a Karl Muelheims assist. Chavez's goal was all the Pirates would need to earn the 1-0 victory against the Thunder.

The Thunder out-shot the Pirates 14-12 in the tightly contested match. Wheaton was awarded nine corner kicks and Whitworth had six. Wheaton's senior goalkeeper, Ryan Seager, made five saves and allowed his first goal of the year. Whitworth keeper Kyle Novak made four saves in recording the shutout for the Pirates.
