Thunder softball team closes out the season with a doubleheader against #7-IWU

The Thunder softball team lost a pair of games on Monday to close out the 2012 season. Seventh-ranked Illinois Wesleyan topped the Thunder 7-1 in today's first game and the Titans defeated Wheaton 5-1 in the finale. Today's twinbill was re-scheduled from its original date of April 28 to today due to rain on Saturday. Wheaton ends the season with a 22-18 record and a 4-10 mark in CCIW play. Illinois Wesleyan is now 33-6 on the year, with an 11-3 record in conference play.

The Titans won today's first game, 7-1 as IWU scored seven runs, on 10 hits, with one error and Wheaton scored one runs, on two hits, committing two errors. Thunder senior pitcher Ainsley McCullough (10-8) took the loss in seven innings, as she allowed seven runs, including five earned runs, on 10 hits, with nine strikeouts and one walk. With her performance today, McCullough became the top strikeout pitcher in school history with 371 career strikeouts to pass Any Wallace's (1995-98) longstanding mark of 364. She also closes out her career seconds in school history in victories, with 40.

Senior infielder Jenna Lawrenz hit a triple to leadoff the game as she went 1-for-3 with Wheaton's lone run in the game. A single by Megan Crucetti accounted for Wheaton's other hit in the game.

Lesley Guenard
Illinois Wesleyan won the second game 5-1 as the Titans scored five runs, on nine hits, with one error and Wheaton plated one run, on six hits, with no errors. Wheaton starting pitcher Danielle Schmidt (12-9) took the loss in 5-1/3 innings. Schmidt allowed five runs, on eight hits, with five walks and seven strikeouts. #McCullough# worked 2/3 of an inning in relief, with one hit and a strikeout. Schmidt's seven strikeouts in the game was enough to give her Wheaton's single-season strikeout record with 125 on the year, passing the 123 strikeouts recorded by McCullough last season.

Schmidt helped her own cause at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a RBI. Lawrenz was 2-for-3 in the game and fellow senior Lesley Guenard (PICTURED RIGHT) hit a single in her final at-bat to close out her stellar career.

Amanda Mattocks
Guenard finishes her career with a school-record 175 hits and also holds the Wheaton records for doubles (52) and at bats (473). Her 105 career runs is the third-highest total in school history, she is second in games played (158) and she is second in RBI with 97. Lawrenz closes out her career as Wheaton's all-time leader in games played with 159 in her four seasons with the Thunder. She is also ninth in school history in base hits with 133. Fellow senior Amanda Mattocks (PICTURED LEFT) is tied for fifth in school history in games played (155), sixth in RBI (81) and she is 10th all-time with 19 career doubles.
