Softball sweeps a doubleheader with North Park

The Wheaton Thunder softball team swept a CCIW doubleheader against North Park (17-9/0-2 CCIW) on Thursday afternoon at Ruth Leedy Field. Wheaton won the opener 2-1 and the Thunder won the nightcap 3-0.

Wheaton is now 19-11 on the year, with a 2-4 record in the CCIW. Wheaton will host University of Dubuque on Saturday at 1 PM at Ruth Leedy Field.

Wheaton won today's first game, 2-1 as the Thunder scored two runs, on eight hits, with one error and North Park plated one run, on five hits, with one error. Thunder starting pitcher Ainsley McCullough (8-5) pitched seven innings in earning the victory. McCullough allowed one run, on five hits, with six strikeouts and five walks. Thunder senior Lesley Guenard was 3-for-4 with a double. Stacey Cladis was 2-for-3 with a walk and both of Wheaton's RBI in the game.

Wheaton took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Jenna Lawrenz drew a leadoff walk and scored three batters later on a RBI through the middle of the infield by Cladis. McCullough pitched well, allowing only two hits after the second inning. North Park drew a bases loaded walk in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game at 1-1.

Wheaton the game with a walkoff base hit in the in the bottom of the seventh inning. Lawrenz opened the top of the seventh inning with a leadoff walk, advancing on a sacrifice on the next at-bat. Two batters later, Lawrenz scored the game-winning run from second base on a RBI-single by Cladis (PICTURED RIGHT) down the leftfield line.

Wheaton won the second game 3-0, as the Thunder scored three runs, on four hits, with no errors and North Park was scoreless on two hits, committing two errors. Wheaton starting pitcher Danielle Schmidt (11-5) earned the win in seven stellar innings of work. Schmidt held North Park to just two hits, with six strikeouts and three walks. Lawrenz was 2-for-3, with a walk, one run scored and one RBI.

Wheaton broke a scoreless tie by scoring two runs in the top of the third inning. Suzanne Teuben drove in two runs in the third as she belted a double to left centerfield. Wheaton added an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning as Lawrenz hit a RBI-single to give Wheaton the 3-0 lead that would become the final score.
