Softball concludes Florida trip with 8-0 record after wins against Wittenberg and Nichols

Cape Coral, Fla –
The Wheaton softball completed its annual Spring Break trip with an undefeated record following a pair wins to wrap up its participation in the 2012 Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on Friday. Wheaton is now 8-0 on the year after a 2-1 victory against Wittenberg University and a 4-0 shutout of Nichols College. The Thunder will travel to Beloit College on March 15 for a doubleheader against the Buccaneers.

Wheaton topped Wittenberg 2-1 as the Thunder scored two runs, on nine hits and one error. Wittenberg scored one run, on four hits, with one error. Wheaton took a 2-0 lead, plating a pair of unearned runs in top of the second inning as freshman Abby Coster and sophomore Jessica Goeke each scored in the inning.

Senior pitcher Ainsley McCullough continued her stellar work, allowing just one run in the game, which came in the bottom of the seventh for the Tigers. In seven innings she scattered four hits, with four walks and four strikeouts. McCullough concludes Wheaton's eight-game trip with a 4-0 record, picking up on save in five appearances. She allowed only one run in 25 innings of work this week.

Shannah Morris was 4-for-4 against the Tigers. Senior All-American Lesley Guenard was 2-for-3 and senior Megan Chrans drove in both of Wheaton's runs in the victory.

Wheaton closed out the trip with a 4-0 victory against Nichols College, its fourth shutout of the trip. Wheaton scored four runs, on 11 hits, with no errors and Nichols plated no runs, on one hit, with two errors. Pitcher Danielle Schmidt held Nichols to one hit in the game as she allowed just four earned runs in 26-1/3 innings this week. She improves to 4-0 on the year, with four appearances on the trip.

Guenard was 2-for-2 and Megan Crucetti was 2-for-2, with one RBI. Stacey Cladis hit a double, driving in a pair of runs in the win
