Cape Coral, Fla. – The Wheaton College softball team improved to 6-0 on the season with two more wins on Thursday at the Gene Cusic Classic. Wheaton was a 10-0 winner against RIT in Thursday's opener and the Thunder closed out its trip with an 8-5 victory in eight innings against Penn State-Behrend. Wheaton will close out its trip on Friday with games against Wittenberg and Nichols.
Wheaton was a convincing 10-0 winner against RIT as the Thunder plated 10 runs, on eight hits and RIT was scoreless, with three runs and two errors. Senior pitcher
Ainsley McCullough recorded her third shutout of the trip to improve to 3-0 on the season. McCullough scattered three hits, with eight strikeouts and no walks.
Centerfielder
Megan Chrans (PICTURED LEFT) was 2-for-2, with a run scored, a run driven in and two stolen bases.
Stacey Cladis drove in three runs, going 1-for-2 at the plate.
Shannah Morris was 1-for-2, with a double and a stolen base, as she drove in two runs and scored another.
Wheaton topped Penn State-Behrend 8-5 in eight innings as the Thunder scored eight runs, on 11 hits, with three errors and PSU-Behrend scored five runs, on five hits, with one error.
Danielle Schmidt (3-0) earned the victory in 5-1/3 innings as she allowed one earned run, on two hits with six strikeouts.
Sarah Hammitt pitched 1-2/3 innings of relief, allowing four unearned runs, on three hits. McCullough recorded the save in one inning of hitless relief and striking out two batters.
Wheaton jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first two innings and the Thunder added two more runs in the top of the fifth to take a 5-0 lead. The Lions scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and added another run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 5-5 and sending it to extra innings.
Wheaton scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning as Cladis and Schmidt hit RBI-singles and
Jessica Goeke drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. McCullough pitched the eighth, striking out two Lions batters to secure the Thunder victory.
Goeke was 3-for-4, with two runs scored, and three stolen bases. Cladis was 2-for-4, with a RBI. Senior
