Thunder softball team opens 2012 season with a pair of wins

The Wheaton College softball team opened its season with a pair of victories on Monday at the Gene Cusic Classic in Cape Coral, Florida. Wheaton was a 12-0 victor against Bethany Lutheran College in the opener and the Thunder concluded its opening day with a 6-3 victory against Rockford College.  Wheaton will play two more games on Tuesday with contests against Northland College and Kenyon College.

Wheaton topped Bethany Lutheran, 12-0 in the opener as pitcher Ainsley McCullough tossed a one-hitter. McCullough worked all five innings, striking out seven batters. The Thunder scored 12 runs, on 11 hits, with no errors and Bethany Lutheran had no runs, on one hit, with four errors.

Sophomore Stacey Cladis was 2-for-4, hitting a pair of doubles as she drove in three runs. Infielder Shannah Morris was 2-for-3 in the game, with a RBI. Senior Jenna Lawrenz also had a multi-hit game, with a walk drawn, as she scored two runs and drove in another run. Catcher Amanda Mattocks drove in a pair of runs for the Thunder.

The Thunder concluded the day with a 6-3 win against Rockford. Wheaton plated six runs, on 10 hits, with no errors and Rockford scored three runs, on four hits, with three errors. Wheaton took a lead thanks to four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Mattocks drove in two runs in the inning and Cladis had a RBI-single to help spark the four run inning.

Danielle Schmidt pitched all seven innings for the Thunder, allowing three runs, on four hits with four walks and nine strikeouts. Megan Chrans and Cladis each went 2-for-4 at the plate for the 'Orange and Blue', as Cladis and Mattocks each drove in two runs. Lawrenz drew threw walks, scoring a pair of runs.
