Thunder softball team hosts the Wheaton Invitational

The Wheaton softball team hosted its Wheaton Invitational on Saturday, as Calvin College and University of Chicago joined the tournament at Ruth Leedy Field on the Wheaton campus. Chicago defeated Wheaton 3-0 in the opening game of the three-game tournament. The Maroons topped Calvin 8-0 in the second game as Chicago secured the tournament title with the win. Wheaton topped Calvin, 6-0 in the final game. Chicago's Kim Cygan was honored as the Most Valuable Player of the Wheaton Invitational.

In the first game of the day, Chicago defeated Wheaton 3-0 as the Maroons scored three runs, on eight hits, with no errors and Wheaton had no runs, on three hits, with no errors. Chicago pitcher Kim Cygan (7-1) earned the victory in seven innings as she held Wheaton scoreless on three hits, with six strikeouts. Wheaton starting pitcher Ainsley McCullough (7-3) took the loss in three innings as she allowed two runs, on four hits. Danielle Schmidt pitched four innings of relief for Wheaton, allowing one run, on four hits, with six strikeouts.

Singles by Wheaton's Jenna Lawrenz, Megan Chrans and Lesley Guenard represented the three hits for the Thunder. Chicago's Tabbetha Bohac was 2-for-3, scoring two runs for the Maroons. Chicago took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning and the Maroons added their third run in the top of the fourth.

Chicago topped Calvin 8-0 in the second game as the Maroons scored eight runs, on 11 hits, with two errors and Calvin scored no runs, on four hits, with two errors. Sarah Neuhaus (4-2) earned the win for Chicago in five innings as she worked five innings, allowing no runs and just three hits. Lina Avila (2-5) took the loss for Calvin in three innings, as she allowed four runs, on five hits. Trista Brownlee pitched 2-2/3 innings of relief as she allowed four runs, on six hits.

Wheaton closed out the tournament with a 6-0 victory against Calvin in the final game. The Thunder scored six runs, on 12 hits, with no errors and Calvin had no runs, on three hits, with one error. Schmidt (9-3) earned the victory in seven innings as she held Calvin scoreless, on three hits, with 11 strikeouts. Trista Brownlee (3-6) took the loss for Calvin as she allowed six runs, including four earned runs, on eight hits.

Lesley Guenard (PICTURED LEFT) was 2-for-2, including a double as she drove in one run for the Thunder. Amanda Mattocks was 2-for-4 and Jessica Goeke was 2-for-4, with a run scored. Lawrenz scored a pair of runs and drove in two more in the win.

Wheaton took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning as Lawrenz scored on a fielder's choice and Guenard drove in a run with a RBI-double.

Wheaton scored four more runs in the top of the fourth inning to extend its lead to 6-0. Wheaton's first two runs in the inning came thanks to a two-run single in a gritty at-bat by Lawrenz. With two outs in the inning, a Calvin fielding error allowed two more Thunder runs score. Schmidt continued to shut down the Knights' offense to earn the win.
