Palos Heights, Ill. – The Wheaton softball team dropped a doubleheader at Trinity Christian College on Wednesday afternoon. The Trolls earned a 1-0 victory in 10 innings to win game-one and the hosts won the second game 4-3 when it was called after five innings due to darkness. Wheaton is now 12-4 on the year, while Trinity Christian improves to 3-9. The Thunder will remain on the road for its next doubleheader when Wheaton travels to Lake Forest College on Saturday afternoon.
Trinity Christian broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the 10th inning in the first game to win 1-0. The Trolls scored one run, on eight hits, with one error and Wheaton had no runs, on two hits, with three errors. Thunder starting pitcher
Ainsley McCullough (5-2) took the loss in nine innings pitched. She allowed one unearned run, on eight hits, with five strikeouts and one walk.
Stacey Cladis and
Shannah Morris each hit a single to account for Wheaton's offense in the game.
The Trolls won the second game 4-3. The score was tied 3-3 after two innings and the Trolls scored a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. The game was called due to darkness after the conclusion of the fifth inning. Trinity Christian scored four runs, on five hits, with four errors and Wheaton plated three runs, on five hits, with three errors.
Junior pitcher
Danielle Schmidt (7-2) took the loss in five innings. Schmidt allowed four runs, with one earned run, on five hits with two strikeouts.
Jenna Lawrenz was 2-for-3, with three RBI.
Wheaton scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, highlighted by a RBI-single from
Suzanne Teuben. The Trolls responded with a run in the bottom of the first inning to trim Wheaton's lead to 2-1. Lawrenz hit a RBI-single in the top of the second inning to extend Wheaton's lead to 3-1; however, the Trolls scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game at 3-3. Trinity Christian plated the one run in the fifth inning to eventually win the game.
