Thunder softball team splits a twinbill with St. Mary's (Ind.)

Wheaton, Ill. –
The Thunder softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with St. Mary's College (Ind.) on Tuesday afternoon under sunny skies at Ruth Leedy Field. St. Mary's rallied to win the first game 3-2 and the Thunder won the second game 5-4. Wheaton is now 12-2 on the year, while St. Mary's owns a 10-2 overall record. The Thunder will travel to Trinity Christian College for a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.

St. Mary's won the opener 3-2, as the Belles scored three runs, on seven hits, with one error and Wheaton plated two runs, on nine hits, with one error. Thunder starting pitcher Danielle Schmidt (6-1) allowed three runs, with two earned runs, on seven hits. The junior struck out 12 Belles, with two walks. Megan Chrans was 2-for-3, with double as she scored one run and drove in another. Shortstop Megan Crucetti (PICTURED LEFT) was 2-for-3, with a double and a run scored. Amanda Mattocks was 2-for-3 at the plate.

A sacrifice fly by Chrans in the bottom of the third inning gave Wheaton a 1-0 lead. St. Mary's rallied with three runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 3-1 advantage on the hosts. Chrans led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a double and a RBI-single by Suzanne Teuben brought her home to cut the Belles' lead to 3-2. However, the Belles got out of the inning and held on for the 3-2 victory.

The Thunder won the nightcap 5-4 as the hosts scored five runs, on eight hits, with two errors and St. Mary's scored four runs, on 10 hits, with one error. Schmidt (7-1) earned the victory in the second game as she worked all seven innings for the second consecutive game. She allowed four runs, with three earned runs, on 10 hits, with six strikeouts and one walk.  Mattocks and Chrans each collected a pair of hits in the win.

Wheaton took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Mattocks (PICTRUED RIGHT) hit a two-run double and Teuben drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the second inning Chrans hit a RBI-double to rightfield that increased Wheaton's lead to 4-0. Schmidt helped her own cause in the bottom of the third inning with a RBI-single to increase the Thunder lead to 5-0. St. Mary's scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning and added two more in the top of the sixth to trim Wheaton's lead to 5-4, but the Thunder held the Belles scoreless in the top of the seventh to earn the victory.
