Wheaton, Ill. - The Wheaton College softball team had its 10-game win streak snapped in a doubleheader split with Concordia University Chicago on Saturday.
The Thunder's first loss of the season now puts their record at 11-1 on the year. Wheaton lost game one 4-3 and won game two 7-6.
Concordia-Chicago gained an early 3-0 through three innings and pitcher Sami DeFord kept Wheaton off the board until the fifth inning.
Lesley Guenard tallied an RBI groundout to make the score 3-1.
Wheaton trailed 4-1 heading into the seventh and final inning. The rally began with one out, as a walk and a pair of singles loaded the bases. Guenard earned her second RBI with a sacrifice fly to left field to score
Megan Crucetti. After another walk,
Amanda Mattocks was hit by a pitch to drive in a run. But Concordia struck out the final batter to end the game 4-3.
Ainsley McCullough (5-1) took the loss on the mound in six innings of work, with 10 hits, four runs, two walks and seven strikeouts.
The Thunder tallied seven hits in the game, led by
Megan Chrans (PICTURED RIGHT) and her four hits in four at-bats.
Jenna Lawrenz went 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored.
Game two started well for the visitors. Wheaton plated three runs in the opening frame thanks to three Concordia-Chicago errors.
With a 3-0 lead in hand, the Thunder scored one run in each of the next three innings. In the second inning, Lawrenz smacked a single and stole second. Chrans immediately drove her in with a single. Wheaton loaded the bags in the third and came away with an RBI single by the pitcher
Danielle Schmidt.
Suzanne Teuben extended the lead to 6-0 with a run-scoring single of her own in the fourth.
However, the Cougars came storming back in the fifth inning. Concordia-Chicago scored five runs thanks to three singles and a fielders choice. The hosts then tied the game in the sixth with an unearned run to force extra innings.
Wheaton took advantage of its scoring opportunity in the eighth inning as Chrans hit a sacrifice fly to score Crucetti to put the team up 7-6.
McCullough came in as mound relief in the eighth and finished off the victory by striking out two batters with the tying run on third base.
Schmidt (6-0) was the winning pitcher in seven innings of work. The junior allowed nine hits, four earned runs and four walks to go with her nine strikeouts. McCullough earned the save.
For the game, Wheaton pounded out 13 hits while committing two errors. Teuben was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and Chrans finished 2-for-2 with RBI. Schmidt (2-for-3),
Stacey Cladis (2-for-3) and
Shannah Morris (2-for-4) all finished with multiple hits.
The Thunder will play its first home games of the season when they host Saint Mary's College at 3 PM on Tuesday.
