Chicago, Ill. – The Wheaton Thunder men's basketball team picked up a 64-52 victory at University of Chicago (3-2) on Wednesday night to improve its season-opening winning streak to four games. Wheaton is 4-0 on the year and will host the CCIW-MIAA Classic this weekend in King Arena. The Thunder will entertain Calvin College at 8 PM in King Arena in Friday's night's second game of the tournament.
Tonight's matchup was tied 14-14 with 10 minutes left in the first half when the Thunder put together a 10-2 run to take a 24-16 lead with 6:30 remaining in the opening half. Six of Wheaton's 10 points in the scoring run came on a of pair three-pointers by
Michael Kvam. Wheaton led the Maroons 28-23 at halftime.
Wheaton increased its lead to an eight-point advantage at 35-27 with 16:30 left in regulation when Chicago responded with eight unanswered points to force a tie game at 35-35 with 13:40 left in the game.
The score was tied 39-39 with 11:35 left in the game when a basket by
Tyler Peters ignited a 17-5 scoring surge for the Thunder to give the guests a 54-44 lead with 5:20 left in the game. Wheaton utilized strong defense in the run as Chicago shot 2-for-10 from the field in key run of a little more than six minutes. Wheaton maintained its edge for the final minutes of the game to earn the 64-52 victory.
Peters led the Thunder with 24 points on 8-for-14 shooting from the field. The junior added eight assists, six rebounds and three steals. Kvam came off the bench to score 15 points, making four three-pointers in the game. Nathan Haynes scored nine points, with six rebounds and four blocked shots.
Brayden Teuscher scored seven points and
Peter Smith added seven rebounds and five points.
Wheaton shot 46.9% (23-49) from the field, with 33.3% (5-15) from three-point range and 72.2% (13-18) at the free throw line. The Maroons posted a 38.9% (21-54) field goal percentage, shooting 0-for-5 from three-point range and 71.4% (10-14) at the free throw line. Each team collected 33 rebounds, with the Maroons holding a 14-10 edge on the offensive glass.
Sam Gage scored 11 points, with five rebounds for the Maroons. Jordan Smith scored 10 points off the Chicago bench. Charlie Hughes and Matt Mackenzie each grabbed six rebounds for the hosts.
