Women's basketball opens season with 81-28 victory over Blackburn

The Wheaton women's basketball team made light work of the Blackburn Beavers in an 81-28 season opening victory on Friday night at the Beth Baker Classic.  Four players scored in double figures for the Thunder while they held the Beavers to just 16.7% from the field.

Wheaton broke a 1-1 tie half a minute into the game by going on a 23-0 run that lasted until the 9:38 mark of the first half, when Blackburn converted their first field goal of the game.  Wheaton would then hold the Beavers without a field goal for the next 8:08.

Defensively, the Thunder held Blackburn to just nine points from the field and capped the half with a jumper by Lauren Graham (PICTURED RIGHT) as time expired to lead 39-13 at the half. Wheaton finished the first half shooting 14-34 (41.2%) from the field and 3-12 (25%) from the the three-point line.

Wheaton would lead by as many as 55 points in the second half as they coasted to an 81-28 victory.  Wheaton finished the game shooting 45.2% (33-73) from te field and 26.3% (5-19) from behind the arc.  The Thunder were 62.5% (10-16) from the charity stripe.  The Thunder held a 40-6 advantage on points in the paint and outrebounded the Beavers 54-29.  Blackburn finished 16.7% from the field (7-42) and 14.3% (1-7) from the three-point line whiel shooting 56.5% (13-23) from the free throw line.

Freshman Moriah Reeves led all scorers with 14 points, seniors Breanna Bohlen and Brooke Olson (PICTURED LEFT) scored 13 and 12 points respectively, and freshman Ellie Zeller scored 11 points for the Thunder.  Lauren Graham tallied eight points and four rebounds and Maris Hovee had six points to go along with seven rebounds in the post for the Thunder.  Hannah Considine led the Thunder with eight rebounds to go along with six points.

The inaugural Beth Baker Classic will continue to tomorrow as Blackburn faces Illinois College in the Consolation game at 3 PM while Wheaton faces Saint Mary's (Ind.) in the Championship game at 5 PM.  Saint Mary's defeated Illinois College 75-73 in the opening game of the tournament.
