Naperville, Ill. – The Thunder men's soccer team earned a 4-3 victory late in the second overtime in a CCIW meeting at North Central College on Wednesday night. North Central rallied from a two-goal deficit in the second half to send the match to overtime. However, Wheaton's
Stephen Golz scored the match-winner with less than two minutes remaining in the second and final overtime to give Wheaton the win.
Freshman
Marshall Hollingsworth gave Wheaton a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when he scored off an assist from
Adam Blackman.
Noah Anthony increased Wheaton's lead to 2-0 with his first goal of the year in the 40th minute. Wheaton maintained its 2-0 lead at the halftime intermission.
North Central's Michael Lenzi cut Wheaton's lead to 2-1 when he scored just 1:47 into the second half off of a Charlie Stanke assist. Blackman gave Wheaton a 3-1 lead when he scored his team-best eighth goal of the year in the 66th minute. North Central responded less than two minutes later when the Cardinals' Joey Faleni scored from a Stanke assist in the 67th minute. North Central's Jake Muszczynski tied the match at 3-3 in the 77th minute to even the contest.
Thunder freshman
Stephen Golz scored the match-winning goal in the 109th minute. There was a mere one minute and 47-seconds remaining in the match when Golz netted the clinching goal.
Wheaton held a 20-11 advantage in shots attempted and the Cardinals owned a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. Thunder goalkeeper
Ryan Seager made four saves and allowed the three Cardinal goals. North Central keeper John McWard made seven stops and allowed Wheaton's four goals.
