Watertown, Wis. - The Wheaton College wrestling team won three of its five dual meets at the Maranatha Baptist Duals on Saturday.
The Thunder improved its team record to 4-5 on the season. The trio of wins came against Lakeland College (27-22), University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (24-22) and Maranatha (48-0). The two defeats were to University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (37-10) and Milwaukee School of Engineering (28-23).
"This was a big improvement over last year's 1-4 performance here when we got pounded," Wheaton head coach
Jim Gruenwald said. "Overall, I was happy with how the guys competed. I thought we could have gone 4-1, but against MSOE we got pinned in two matches where we were leading. This shows how much we've turned around compared to last year. We were just two individual matches away from being 6-3 as a team this year."
Darren Faber had the most success on the day, running past all five of his opponents for victories.
Caleb Cardenas (PICTURED RIGHT) also posted a strong 4-1 day.
William Byrd went 3-1 in his first collegiate action for the Thunder.
Tom Foy,
Mitch Steed,
Kyle Patton and
Matt McCrary all went 3-2 in their matches.
Matthew Cordell and
Luke Sims each picked up two victories.
The Thunder are back on the road next Saturday at Manchester College's Spartan Mat Classic.
