Wheaton, Ill. – The Thunder women's soccer team extended its season-opening win streak to three matches on Wednesday afternoon with a 6-1 victory against Calvin College. Wheaton, now 3-0 on the season, will resume its schedule on Saturday at 4 PM when St. Thomas (Minn.) visits Joe Bean Stadium. Calvin is now 3-0 on the year.
Wheaton wasted little time recording its first goal as senior
Katelyn Kishkunas tallied her first goal of the year at the 1:08 mark of the match, off an assist from
Jaime Orewiler. Freshman
Sarah Guidera (PICTURED ABOVE) extended Wheaton's lead to 2-0 in the 17th minute when she put the ball into the net on a shot from five yards away from the goal. Four and a half minutes later
Laura Karsten received a
Keri Shannon corner kick and headed the ball into the back of the net for a 3-0 Wheaton lead at the 21:47 mark of the match. Wheaton led the Knights 3-0 at the halftime intermission.
Guidera extended Wheaton's lead to 4-0 with her second goal of the match when she scored on a double-assist from Kishkunas and Kaitlyn LeBaudour at the 54:13 mark. Wheaton's lead increased to 5-0 in 67th minute when an
Ali Kopelman (PICTURED RIGHT) pass was deflected off
Dani DeLeon whose deflection found the foot of Le Baudour who scored from four yards out. Calvin's Liz Cancel scored for the Knights 70:03 into the match, to cut the Thunder lead to 5-1. Kopelman netted her first goal of the season about 50-seconds later, (70:57) off of an assist from
Annie Hamilton to account for the 6-1 final score.
Wheaton out-shot the Knights 26-8 in the match, with the Thunder holding a 9-2 edge in corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper
Hilary Barreto played in goal for first half for Wheaton with one save and no goals allowed. Freshman
Kelsey Graham made four saves and allowed one goal, playing the second half. Calvin used four keepers in the match, with starter Stephanie Goeldner making four saves and allowing three goals in 32 minutes. Emily Mulder played 19 minutes, with one save and no goals allowed. Lauren Merz made two saves and allowed two goals in 20 minutes of action and Ashton Hearn made two saves and allowed one goal in 19 minutes.
