Wheaton, Ill. -- The Wheaton women's soccer team kicked off its 2026 schedule on Tuesday night by welcoming Calvin University to Joe Bean Stadium for a non-conference curtain-raiser. Tonight's match marked the first meeting of the decorated programs in four years and the Knights' first visit to Wheaton since 2021. The Michigan squad, ranked 17th in the country in this year's United Soccer Coaches preseason poll, used a strong defensive performance to snatch a 2-1 victory in a competitive clash that saw all three goals come from set pieces.
Tuesday's contest was delayed by one hour due to extreme afternoon heat in Wheaton. But neither team allowed the unfavorable conditions to seriously impact their energy and performance levels in a hard-fought matchup. Calvin began the game on the front foot and controlled the opening half of play with 57% possession and 12 shot attempts. The Knights put four efforts on target and did not allow a single shot on goal at the other end while earning eight corner kicks to the hosts' zero, as their methodical and well-drilled approach unsettled the Thunder early on.
The visitors' opening goal arrived just shy of the 20-minute mark when a dangerous dribble into the Wheaton penalty area was stopped by a foul and resulted in a spot kick. The ensuing penalty attempt was forcefully driven into the left side of the goal to break the deadlock. The Thunder carved out a pair of half-chances in the remainder of the opening period and had to withstand an attacking flurry just before the break to enter the locker room trailing 1-0.
Calvin picked up where it left off to begin the second 45 with more offensive pressure, but Wheaton tested the visitors' shot-stopper with its first attempt on frame a few minutes after the intermission. The five-time defending MIAA champions doubled their advantage on 60 minutes when a lasered corner kick delivery was met by the Knights' tall defender, who powered a header into the top right corner to create separation on the scoreboard.
But after a succession of corner kicks at the other end, Wheaton finally struck gold in the 79th minute when senior
Julia Tallungan (
pictured left) scored an impressive Olimpico goal directly from the left corner flag. Her looping delivery sailed over everyone's head and bounced into the far side of the net to stun the Knights' defense and give the Thunder an avenue back into the contest.
A dramatic late comeback did not materialize, however, as the experienced visitors stifled the hosts' offensive momentum and saw out their narrow win without any major scares in the closing minutes.
Calvin finished the game with a healthy 21-6 disparity in shot attempts and a 10-3 advantage in corner kick opportunities. The Knights put nine efforts on target while allowing just two in a confident display at both ends of the pitch. No cards were shown in a relatively clean meeting.

Lydia Martin made seven saves and played the full 90 minutes in her first appearance for the Thunder.
Next up for Wheaton is the annual Bob Baptista Invitational. The squad is set to welcome Aurora University, Dominican University, and Greenville University to town for the four-team competition this weekend. The Thunder will face Aurora at 7 PM on Friday and Dominican at 7 PM on Saturday, with the neutral site games taking place at 4:30 PM each day.
