GAME STATS Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Wheaton College men's soccer team fell behind after facing a barrage of first-half shots and lost 2-1 Calvin College on Friday.
The Thunder fall to 3-2-1 while the Knights improve to 4-2.
Calvin owned the first half, taking 17 shots in the opening 45 minutes to only five by Wheaton. After being held off for much of the period, the Knights broke through with a goal by Lawrence Murray in the 42nd minute. Thunder goalie
Ryan Seager made seven saves in the half to keep the score 1-0.
The hosts gave themselves some cushion in the 62nd minute with a score from Tyler Vegter to make it 2-0. Wheaton got on the board in the 84th minute courtesy of a header goal by senior forward
Drew Golz (PICTURED), his third of the season. The assist came from sophomore defender
Stephen Russo.
The foul-filled contest featured a total of 39 fouls and 11 yellow cards, with seven going against the Thunder. Calvin finished with a 22-12 shot advantage while Wheaton held the 6-2 corner kick lead. Seager made 10 saves in taking the loss. Goalie Michael Dolan made one save to gain the win for the Knights.
Wheaton continue its weekend in Michigan with a game at Hope College at 7 PM (EDT) on Saturday.
