Wheaton men's soccer ties University of Chicago 0-0

GAME STATS Box Score

Wheaton, Ill.
- Through 90 minutes of regulation and two overtimes, the Wheaton College men's soccer team ended its match against University of Chicago with a 0-0 tie on Tuesday.

The No. 21-ranked Thunder and the Maroons now both own identical 3-1-1 records on the season.

Both sides were feeling each other out in the early going of the match. Chicago displayed better possession on offense and went forward effectively as a unit. The Maroons took several shots, but none on goal in the half as most sailed well wide.

Wheaton struggled with its passing crispness as many balls played into space ended up at the feet of Maroon defenders. The Thunder tried to get the offense going by playing long balls in the air to the forwards, but Chicago's defenders effectively thwarted the rushes with clearing headers.

The Thunder got its attack more on track in the second half by picking up the aggression and intensity on runs. The closest call of the night came with 12:30 left in the game. Wheaton forward Drew Golz ran past his tripped-up defender on a deep ball and went one-on-one with the goalie. But goalie Elek Lane guessed right and made a leaping save to keep his sheet clean.

Chicago's best chance of the game occured with under six minutes remaining in regulation. Stanton Coville was all alone when received a cross on the left side of the box. But his left-footed shot rode high and smacked off the crossbar.

After a pair of 10 minute overtimes, the game closed out knotted at zeros.

Both teams finished with nine shots and the Thunder led in corner kicks 4-3. Wheaton goalie Ryan Seager (PICTURED) finished with no saves while Chicago keeper Lane made three saves.

The Thunder resume action this weekend in Michigan with a Friday game at Calvin College and a Saturday game at Hope College.
