Decatur, Ill. – The Thunder softball team had its season ended on Friday with its second loss at the double-elimination CCIW Softball Tournament. Carthage College bested the Thunder 5-3 in an elimination game. Wheaton ends the season with a 23-17 overall record, while Carthage heads to the championship round of the tournament with a 23-16 overall record.
Carthage scored five runs, on 10 hits with no errors and Wheaton plated three runs, on six hits, with two errors. Wheaton sophomore
Danielle Schmidt pitched 4-2/3 innings, allowing four runs, with two earned runs, on six hits.
Ainsley McCullough worked 2-1/2 innings of relief, allowing one run, on four hits.
Carthage jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. The Lady Reds added a run in the top of the third inning to extend their lead to 3-0. Wheaton's
Amanda Mattocks drove in a pair of runs on a two-run single in the bottom of the third inning to cut Carthage's lead to 3-2.
Carthage added a run in the top of the fourth inning and added another in the top of the sixth inning to increase its lead to 5-2. The Thunder loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning and got a RBI by
Lesley Guenard to cut the Carthage lead to 5-3, however, Wheaton stranded the tying run at second base as Carthage got out of the jam to win the game.
Wheaton concludes its record-setting season, with 10 single-season records established in the 2011 season.
