Decatur, Ill. – North Central College defeated Wheaton College on Friday in a game that began at approximately 6 PM on Thursday night, but was suspended due to a Thunderstorm in the top of the second game. The game resumed at 2 PM on Friday with an 8-3 victory for the Cardinals.
North Central scored eight runs in the victory with eight hits and two errors, while Wheaton plated three runs, on five hits with two errors.
Danielle Schmidt pitched on Thursday, working 1-1/3 of an inning, with three runs and three hits.
Ainsley McCullough took to the pitching circle when play resumed on Friday. McCullough (10-8) took the loss in 4-2/3 innings, allowing five runs, one of which was earned on five hits, with six strikeouts.
Sarah Hammitt pitched one scoreless inning, allowing no hits.
On Thursday, Thunder senior
Katie Iser led off the bottom of the first inning with a single and she scored on a ball hit by
Lesley Guenard that was misplayed by the Cardinals.
Amanda Mattocks followed with a double and a bunt by
Jenna Lawrenz drove Guenard home. A sacrifice fly by
Suzanne Teuben drove in Mattocks.
The Cardinals hit a three-run home run in the top of the second inning with one out and the game was sent into delay immediately following the home run. Following a delay of more than an hour, the game was suspended due to weather conditions and the schedule resumption for Friday was issued.
When play resumed on Friday the score remained tied at 3-3 until the Cardinals scored a run in the top of the third inning to give North Central a 4-3 lead. The Cardinals scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning to break the game open with the 8-3 final outcome.
