Rock Island, Ill. - The Wheaton College softball team was shutout by Augustana College 10-0 and 1-0 in a conference doubleheader on Saturday.
The Thunder fell to 12-11-1 overall and 0-4 in the CCIW. The Vikings improved to 14-12 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
Game one ended in five innings as Augustana scored seven runs in the frame to enact the 10-run rule.
Ainsley McCullough (5-4) took the loss in the circle, surrendering seven hits in 4-1/3 innings with one walk and four strikeouts. Wheaton scratched out four hits, with
Lesley Guenard going 2-for-2.
A pitchers duel commenced in game two. Wheaton's
Danielle Schmidt and Augustana's Ashley Yaros both went all seven innings and only allowed two hits each. The hurlers matched zeros on the scoreboard until the fifth inning when the Vikings scored the game's lone run on a single. The Thunder's best chance to score came in the third inning when they loaded the bases with one out. But a strikeout and a fly out ended the threat.
Schmidt (5-5) struck out eight and also walked eight.
Katie Iser picked up both of Wheaton's hits, going 2-for-3 with a walk.
Wheaton will be on the road at University of Chicago for a 3 PM doubleheader on Tuesday.
