Wheaton, Ill. – The Thunder softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader with Trinity Christian College on Thursday at Ruth Leedy Field. Wheaton rallied to win the first game 9-8 and the Thunder secured the sweep with an 8-3 victory in the nightcap.
Wheaton is now 22-13-1 on the year, as the Thunder tied the program's school single-season record for victories – tying the 22 wins put up in 1995. Wheaton will conclude the regular season at 1 PM on Saturday when it hosts Millikin in a critical conference doubleheader that could help determine Wheaton's possible participation in next week's four-team CCIW Softball Tournament.
Wheaton won the first game 9-8 as the Thunder scored nine runs on seven hits, with one error and Trinity Christian plated eight runs, with nine hits and four errors. Thunder starting pitcher
Sarah Hammitt worked 2-1/3 innings, allowing six runs, on five hits. Junior
Ainsley McCullough worked 4-2/3 innings in relief to earn the victory. She allowed two runs, on four hits, with four strikeouts.
Lesley Guenard was 2-for-3, with a walk, three RBI and two runs scored. Catcher
Amanda Mattocks went 2-for-4, with a run scored and two RBI.
Wheaton took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning as
Katie Iser scored following a leadoff walk and Mattocks drove in a run with a RBI-single. The Trolls scored five runs in the top of the second inning to take a 5-2 lead. Wheaton cut the Trinity Christian lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the second inning on a RBI-single by Guenard. The guests extended their lead to 6-3 with a run in the top of the third inning.
Wheaton scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take an 8-6 lead. Guenard and
Megan Crucetti each hit two-run singles in the fourth inning and Mattocks added a RBI-single to help give the hosts a lead. The Trolls plated a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game at 8-8.
Suzanne Teuben hit a leadoff single to open the bottom of the seventh inning for the Thunder and she scored the game-winning run two batters later on a RBI-single by pinch hitter
Stacey Cladis.
Wheaton won the finale 8-3 as the hosts scored eight runs, on 16 hits, with one error and Trinity Christian scored three runs, on five hits, with one error. Sophomore starting pitcher
Danielle Schmidt (10-5) earned the win in seven innings for a complete game.
Guenard was 2-for-3, with three RBI and two runs scored. Guenard hit a triple and she collected her 14th double of the season in the game to tie Wheaton's single-season record for doubles – matching her with former teammate
Adrienne Munoz (2010) and Sarah Callicutt (2007). Crucetti was 2-for-2 with a RBI.
Katie Iser was 2-for-3, with a run scored and
Jenna Lawrenz was 2-for-3 with a RBI. Cladis was 2-for-4 with double and a pair of runs scored. Sophomore
Elizabeth Perez was 2-for-4, with a run scored and another run driven in.
Wheaton took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Guenard belted a two-out triple to rightfield and she scored on a TCC error on the play to give the hosts the lead. The Trolls tied the game at 1-1 with a run in the top of the second inning.
Wheaton recorded six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 7-1 lead in the game. Guenard hit a three-run double to highlight the scoring in the inning and
Kelli Hennessey and Perez each drove in a run with a RBI-single. Lawrenz drove in a run with sacrifice bunt to help the hosts in the big inning.
Crucetti drove in a run with a RBI-single in the bottom of the third inning to increase Wheaton's lead to 8-1. The Trolls added two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to account for the final score of 8-3.
