Wheaton softball goes 0-2 in season opener at Tucson Invitational Games

- The Wheaton College softball team opened its season with a pair of losses to Haverford College and Coe College on Monday at the Tucson Invitational Games.

In the first game of the day, Haverford defeated the Thunder 11-3. The Fords scored four runs in the third inning and four more runs in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach.

Ainsley McCullough took the complete-game loss in the pitching circle, allowing eight hits to go with five strikeouts and four walks. Wheaton tallied six hits on the day, including two hits and an RBI from Lesley Guenard. Jenna Lawrenz and McCullough added one RBI each.

Game two saw No. 24-ranked Coe come out on top with a 12-4 victory over Wheaton. The third inning was a big inning once again, as the Kohawks scored eight runs on four hits in the frame. Danielle Schmidt was saddled with the loss. The sophomore gave up 10 hits with six walks and three strikeouts.

Katie Iser led the Thunder's offensive effort with three hits. Lawrenz drove in two more runs, with one RBI each coming from McCullough and Shannah Morris. Amanda Mattocks added a double.

Wheaton continues its stay in Arizona on Tuesday with a 6:00 PM (MT) game against Saint Mary's (Minn.) University and an 8:00 PM (MT) contest versus University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.
