Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Wheaton College men's basketball team rallied from a double-digit deficit but fell in the final seconds 79-78 to Hope College in the CCIW-MIAA Classic on Friday.
The No. 13-ranked Thunder was dealt its first loss of the season to run its record to 5-1. The Flying Dutchmen are also 5-1 this season.
Hope led from the onset and its largest lead was 13 points midway through the first half. The Flying Dutch were led by David Krombeen's 14 points, shot 57 percent as a team and held a sizable 19-9 rebounding edge.
Wheaton trailed at halftime 39-32 and the deficit stayed around 10 points for most of the second half. But down nine with four minutes left, the Thunder made a late charge, eventually taking the lead with 1:33 left on a three-pointer by
Jeremy Pflederer.
Wheaton was up three with 17 seconds left. But two free throws and a steal by Krombeen set up Colton Overway's two game-winning free throws.
Despite battling foul trouble,
Aaron Garriott led the Thunder offense with 23 points.
Tim McCrary collected 18 points and eight rebounds.
Tyler Peters added 13 points.
Spencer Schultze (PICTURED RIGHT) ended up with 11 points and nine rebounds.
Wheaton shot 45 percent from the field (23 of 51), 33 percent on three pointers (5 of 15) and 87 percent on free throws (27 of 31).
Hope shot 51 percent from the field (30 of 59), 23 percent on three pointers (3 of 13) and 73 percent on free throws (16 of 22). Krombeen was the lead scorer with 28 points and Overway tallied 14 points. The Flying Dutchmen won rebounding battle 32-29.
The Thunder will next play Calvin College at 5:30 PM (ET) on Saturday.
