Wheaton women's basketball rolls 84-51 at Aurora

Aurora, Ill. - The Wheaton College women's basketball team built a sizable lead early en route to an 84-51 victory over Aurora University on Tuesday.

The Thunder even out its record at 2-2 while the Spartans fall to 2-2.

After falling behind 4-0 to start the game, Wheaton reeled off 11-straight points and kept its lead the rest of the way. The Thunder steadily increased that margin and went into halftime up 43-23.

While both teams shot 36 percent in the half, Wheaton came out ahead thanks to a 23-16 edge on the boards and hitting five three-pointers compared to zero by Aurora. Brooke Olson and Elisabeth Potts paced the offense with 11 and 10 points, respectively, in the opening stanza.

Thunder made seven out of its first eight shots to open the second half to increase the lead to 57-31. Aurora could not cut into the deficit that remained at least 30 points much of the second half.

Wheaton finished the game making 30 of 68 field goals (44 percent), 7 of 22 from three-point range (32 percent) and 17 of 20 free throws (85 percent). The Thunder owned a 42-32 rebounding advantage and also won the assists category 22-8.

Potts was the offensive catalyst, hitting 9 of 10 shots for 21 points. Olson ran the point to the tune of 15 points and seven assists. Lindsey Brenneman tallied nine points and nine rebounds, while Lauren Graham collected eight points and seven rebounds. Freshman Janessa Bohlen added nine points.

Aurora 18-for-48 field goals (38 percent), 3-for-16 from beyond the arc (19 percent) and 12-for-23 from the charity stripe (52 percent). Jocelyn Wide led the Spartans with 10 points.

Wheaton returns for a 6 PM home game against University of Chicago on November 30.
