Wheaton, Ill. – The 2010 edition of the Wheaton College men's soccer team debuted on Friday night with a 1-0 victory against Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in the 2010 Bob Baptista Invitational. Ohio Wesleyan,
ranked 13th in the Division III preseason poll, defeated Elmhurst College in Friday's other match of the men's bracket. The men's portion of the tournament will conclude on Saturday with Elmhurst (0-1) facing Rose-Hulman (0-1) at 2 PM and Wheaton (1-0) entertaining Ohio Wesleyan (1-0) at 7 PM.
The start of tonight's Wheaton-Rose Hulman match was delayed 28 minutes due to issues with the lights at Wheaton's Joe Bean Stadium. The two teams battled through more than 30 minutes of scoreless soccer during the first half of action. Thunder freshman
Chad Musgraves was fouled in the penalty box at the 34:39 mark of the match, awarding Wheaton with a penalty kick. Junior
Drew Golz converted the penalty kick to score Wheaton's first goal of the season and give the hosts a 1-0 advantage. The Thunder advantage remained at 1-0 for the rest of the contest.
Each team took 12 shots in the contest, with Wheaton holding a 5-4 edge in shots on goal and Rose-Hulman owning a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks. Wheaton's sophomore goalkeeper,
Ryan Seager, posted a shutout with four saves to his credit on the evening. Seager made two key saves late in the match; in the 76th and 77 minutes respectively to maintain his shutout. Rose-Hulman goalkeeper Eric Davenport made three saves in the match.
