Thunder women's soccer team tops #4-ranked William Smith, 1-0

Geneva, New York – The Wheaton College women's soccer team snapped its two-match losing streak with a 1-0 victory at William Smith College on Friday afternoon. Today's contest was a meeting of nationally-ranked opponents as William Smith is ranked fourth in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III poll and Wheaton is ranked 25th in the same poll.

Thunder head coach Pete Felske said of his team following today's win, “This is the first time this year I saw us show signs of what has made us great in the past. We worked hard today, we were quick and physical.” He continued, “This is the first time this year we came in with the attitude that we don't know what you as our opponent will do, but we are just going to do what we do best.”

Wheaton held an 8-7 advantage in shots in the first half, however, the contest was scoreless at halftime. Midway through the second half, Wheaton broke the scoreless draw as senior Brittany Bergh collected a rebound that hit off the crossbar and into the goal to give the guests the 1-0 advantage, 64:14 into the match. Bergh's goal would be all the Thunder would need behind a strong effort from its defense. Felske noted, “Our marking backs of Megan Campbell (PICTURED RIGHT) and Bucky [Kaitlyn Le Baudour] deserve a lot of credit. They are playing hard and Amanda Brait is playing intelligently."

Wheaton out-shot the Herons 18-12 in the match and the Thunder held a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. William Smith maintained a 3-2 edge in corner kicks. Freshman goalkeeper Maddie Allen earned her first collegiate shutout, making three saves in the match. William Smith netminder Amanda Davis made six saves and allowed just Bergh's goal.

Wheaton is now 5-2-0 on the season, while the William Smith falls to 5-1. Wheaton will conclude its two-match trip to New York with a match at University of Rochester on Saturday at 3 PM (EDT).
