Wheaton, Ill. - The Wheaton College men's soccer team played two overtimes and ended in a 1-1 tie with Hope College on Saturday.
The No. 18-ranked are now Thunder 2-1-1 while the Flying Dutchmen are 2-0-2.
In an evenly played first half, Hope kept attacking Wheaton's defense with long bomb passes that the Dutchmen would run under and then try to beat the defenders in a foot race to the goal. The pressure paid dividends in the 31st minute. Off a corner kick, the ball went skidding through the top of the box, past three defenders and Maxwell DeBoef scored the goal as his ball deflected off a player and into the top corner of the net.
The Thunder kept pushing on offense and finally hit pay dirt in the 78th minute. A foul in front of the box gave Wheaton a free kick, and
Jason Lollar spun the ball past the goalkeeper for the equalizer.
Josh Clark was credited with the assist.
The game went into two overtimes, but neither team could get the deciding score.
The Thunder held a 21-15 shot advantage in a physical contest. Both teams combined for three yellow cards and 42 fouls. Wheaton goalkeeper
Ryan Seager made five saves with one goal allowed while his Hope counterpart Logan Neil had the same statistics.
The Thunder continue its home stand on Wednesday with a 7:00 PM game vs. Aurora University.
