Wheaton, Ill. – The Thunder softball team split a doubleheader with University of Chicago on Monday afternoon at Wheaton's Ruth Leedy Field. Chicago won the opener 5-0 and the Thunder won the nightcap 5-4. Wheaton is now 14-10 on the year, while Chicago is 13-6-1. The Thunder will return to action on Friday afternoon with a CCIW doubleheader against Carthage College at 3 PM.
Chicago won the opener 5-0 as the Maroons scored five runs, on eight hits, with two errors and Wheaton scored no runs, on four hits, with two errors. Chicago scored a run in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead, a lead the guests would never relinquish. Chicago added two more runs in the top of the third and two more in the top of the fifth to account for the 5-0 final score.
Thunder starting pitcher
Ainsley McCullough (7-6) took the loss in seven innings of work. McCullough allowed five runs, three of the earned, on eight hits, with five strikeouts and two walks. Shortstop

Wheaton won the twinbill's finale by a score of 5-4. Wheaton scored five runs, on eight hits, with three errors and Chicago scored four runs, on five hits, with no errors.
Wheaton starting pitcher
Danielle Schmidt (6-4) earned the win in 6-1/3 innings. Schmidt allowed four runs, three of the earned, on five hits, with six walks and six strikeouts. McCullough earned her second save of the year in 2/3 of an inning in relief. Sophomore
Amanda Mattocks was 2-for-2, with two RBI for the Thunder.
Chicago scored two runs in the top of the first inning, however, Wheaton responded with three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-2 lead. Mattocks hit a two-run single in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game and sophomore
Jenna Lawrenz added a run-scoring single to give Wheaton the edge at 3-2.
Wheaton extended its lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the third inning when
Suzanne Teuben drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. Chicago trimmed Wheaton's lead to 4-3 with a run in the top of the fourth inning.
Wheaton scored a key insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Teuben hit a one-out single to rightfield and she scored two batters later on a two-out double to centerfield by
Megan Chrans. Chicago scored one run in the top of the seventh inning to cut Wheaton's lead to 5-4. However, McCullough entered the game with one out and Maroon base runners at first and second. She induced the first Chicago batter she faced in popping up in foul territory and she got the second batter she face to line out to Wheaton junior
Kelli Hennessey at third base to end the game.
