Softball concludes its season with a split at Millikin

– The Thunder softball team concluded its season on Tuesday afternoon with a split of a CCIW doubleheader at Millikin (21-15/4-8). The host Big Blue won the opener 4-3 and Wheaton was a 7-0 victor in the nightcap. Wheaton wraps up the year with a 21-19 overall record and a 5-9 mark in CCIW play.

Millikin won the first game 4-3, as the hosts scored four runs, on seven hits, with one error and Wheaton plated three runs, on nine hits, with two errors. Thunder starting pitcher Ainsley McCullough (11-11) took the loss in six innings of work. McCullough allowed four runs, with three earned runs, on seven hits, with four strikeouts and one walk.

Senior Adrienne Munoz was 3-for-4, with a run scored as she belted a double. Outfielder Lesley Guenard was 2-for-4, with a home run.

Millikin took a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Wheaton tied the game at 1-1 with Guenard's home run in the top of the second inning. Millikin regained the lead, with a 4-1 edge as the Big Blue scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Wheaton trimmed Millikin's lead to 4-3 with two Thunder runs in the top of the fifth inning. Lauren Griffith drove in a run with a RBI single and Katie Iser also knocked in a run in the fifth inning.

Wheaton won the nightcap 7-0, as the Thunder scored seven runs, on 12 hits, with one error and Millikin scored no runs, on five hits, with two errors. Freshman starting pitcher Danielle Schmidt (9-8) earned the complete game victory in seven innings. Schmidt held the Big Blue scoreless, on five hits, with eight strikeouts.

Munoz was 3-for-4, with a home run and a double in her final collegiate game. Iser was 3-for-3, with a run scored and a RBI. Griffith was 3-for-4, with a run scored. Megan Chrans was 2-for-3, with two runs scored and two driven in.

Wheaton took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning as Suzanne Teuben and Kelli Hennessey# each drove in a run. Wheaton increased its lead to 3-0 with a run in the bottom of the third inning.

The Thunder added four more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to account for the 7-0 final score. Munoz led off the fifth inning with a solo home run Chrans hit a two-run single in the inning and Iser drove in a run with a single.

Munoz closed out her collegiate career with a strong doubleheader that saw her go 6-for-8 at the plate with a home run and two doubles. In just three seasons at Wheaton, Munoz exits the Thunder softball program with her name listed prominently throughout the team's career record book. She is third in school history in runs scored (96), third in home runs (11) and third in total bases (208). Munoz is now fifth in career hits (138) and fifth in doubles (29).
