The Thunder softball team shuts out North Park twice to sweep a doubleheader

Wheaton, Ill.
– The Thunder softball team swept a CCIW doubleheader against North Park University on Tuesday afternoon at Ruth Leedy Field. Wheaton earned a 1-0 victory in the opener and the Thunder accomplished the sweep with a 5-0 victory in the finale. Wheaton is now 20-16 on the year and 4-6 in the CCIW; while North Park is 15-15 overall and 3-9 in conference play. The Thunder will resume conference play on Thursday with a 3 PM doubleheader at North Central.

Wheaton earned a 1-0 victory in the opener as the Thunder scored one run, on seven hits, with two errors and North Park had no runs, on five hits, with one error. Thunder starting pitcher Ainsley McCullough (11-9) earned the victory in the seven innings of work. She held the Vikings scoreless on five hits, with no walks and three strikeouts. Thunder sophomore Lesley Guenard was 2-for-2, with a stolen base. Centerfielder Katie Iser was 2-for-3 in the contest.

Wheaton broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Thunder threat in the sixth was sparked by consecutive one-out singles from Lauren Griffith and Iser. Sophomore Amanda Mattocks hit a single to rightfield that brought Griffith home and gave Wheaton the one run it would need in the narrow 1-0 victory.

Wheaton shut out the Vikings for the second consecutive game to earn the 5-0 victory in the nightcap. The Thunder scored five runs, on 12 hits, with two errors and North Park scored no runs, on two hits, with no errors.

Freshman Danielle Schmidt (8-7) held North Park scoreless in seven innings of action to earn the victory. Schmidt limited the Vikings to two hits, with eight strikeouts. Megan Chrans was 2-for-4, with a pair of doubles as she scored a run and drove in a run. Lesley Guenard hit two doubles as she was 2-for-4, with a run scored. Griffith was 2-for-3 with three RBI and Kelli Hennessey was 2-for-2, with a run scored and a RBI. Senior Adrienne Munoz was 2-for-4, with a run scored in the final home game of her Thunder softball career.

Wheaton broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning, as the Thunder scored all five of its runs in the inning. Guenard led off the fourth inning with a double to leftfield and she scored on the next at bat when Chrans belted a double to right centerfield. Kelli Hennessey brought Guenard home with a RBI-single to increase the hosts' lead to 2-0. With the bases loaded, Griffith belted a three-run double down the leftfield line to clear the bases and give Wheaton the 5-0 lead that would become the final score.
