Softball drops a pair to Illinois Wesleyan

Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton softball team dropped a pair of games on Saturday in a CCIW doubleheader against Illinois Wesleyan. The Titans won the first game 9-0 and won the finale 3-0. Illinois Wesleyan is now 21-9 on the year and 7-3 in the CCIW. Wheaton is 18-16 overall, with a 2-6 mark in conference play. The Thunder will host North Park on Tuesday in a CCIW doubleheader at 3 PM.

Illinois Wesleyan won the first game of the twinbill 9-0, as the guests scored nine runs, on 11 hits, with three errors and Wheaton had no runs, on three hits, with no errors. Wheaton starting pitcher Ainsley McCullough (10-9) took the loss in five innings of work. McCullough allowed nine runs, on 11 hits, with two walks. Sophomore Jenna Lawrenz hit a double and Kelli Hennessey and Lauren Griffith each hit singles to account for Wheaton's hits in the game.

Illinois Wesleyan accomplished the sweep by winning game two with a 3-0 victory in the nightcap. The Titans plated three runs, on four hits, with no errors and Wheaton had no runs, on four hits with no errors. Illinois Wesleyan broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth inning, as the Titans scored three runs. That would be enough for the guests to secure the victory.

Thunder freshman Danielle Schmidt (7-7) took the loss in six innings of work. She allowed three runs, on four hits, with four walks and three strikeouts. Freshman Lauren Griffith hit a double for Wheaton. Singles by Adrienne Munoz, Katie Iser and Lawrenz helped account for Wheaton's four hits in the contest.
