Lake Forest, Ill. - The Wheaton College softball team used rock-solid pitching and clutch hitting to sweep a doubleheader at Lake Forest College 5-2 and 2-1 on Wednesday.
The Thunder improved to 18-14 on the season while the Foresters fell to 14-10.
In game one, the Wheaton offense staked starting pitcher
Ainsley McCullough (10-8) to a lead it would not relinquish. The Thunder scored an RBI single by
Lauren Griffith in the third inning.
Amanda Mattocks added to the lead by knocking an RBI single and an additional run scored on an error in the fifth.
McCullough gave up two runs in the fifth inning as well, but she cruised the rest of the way to get the complete game victory. The sophomore struck out eight, walked two and only allowed four hits on the afternoon.
Mattocks made sure the lead stood up with two insurance RBI in the seventh inning. She went 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBI. Griffith added a 3-for-4 performance at the dish and
Adrienne Munoz was 2-for-4.
Freshman hurler
Danielle Schmidt (7-6) followed up with one of her best outings of the season in game two. Schmidt surrendered a sole unearned run in the first inning and held the Foresters in check the rest of the way. She only gave up thee hits and walked one while striking out six in a complete game.
A pair of RBI singles by
Lesley Guenard and
Suzanne Teuben gave Wheaton both its runs in the fifth inning. Schmidt closed out the game with a strikeout and stranded the tying run on third base.
Guenard led Thunder hitters by going 2-for-3.
The Thunder resume its conference schedule by hosting Illinois Wesleyan University at 1:00 PM on Saturday.
