Wheaton, Ill. – The Thunder softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader with the University of Dubuque on Tuesday afternoon at Ruth Leedy Field. Wheaton was a 10-2 winner in the opener and the Thunder won the nightcap 7-2. Wheaton is now 13-7 on the season, while the Spartans fall to 6-10 overall. Wheaton will open conference play on Thursday afternoon at 3 PM with a doubleheader against Augustana.
Wheaton won the opener 10-2 in five innings, as the Thunder scored 10 runs, on 13 hits, with no errors and Dubuque scored two runs, on three hits, with four errors. Sophomore
Ainsley McCullough (7-4) earned the win in five innings of work. McCullough allowed two runs, on three hits, with nine strikeouts and two walks. Senior
Adrienne Munoz was 3-for-4, with five RBI and a run score as she collected a double and a triple in the game. Thunder shortstop
Lauren Griffith was 3-for-4, with two RBI and a run scored.
Jenna Lawrenz was 2-for-2, with two runs scored, while
Katie Iser and
Kelli Hennessey also had two-hit outings.
Wheaton took a 3-0 lead with three runs in the bottom of the second inning, as Hennessey collected a RBI single and Munoz drove in a pair of runs with a double. Wheaton stretched its lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the third inning when
Megan Chrans scored on a Spartan error.
Dubuque cut Wheaton's lead to 4-2 with two runs in the top of the fourth inning; however, Wheaton plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 6-2 lead. Munoz belted a RBI-triple in the innning, Griffith hit a RBI-single and Chrans also drove in a run. Wheaton plated three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to account for the final score of 10-2 as Munoz hit a two-run single and Griffith hit a run scoring single.
Wheaton won the second game of the twinbill, 7-2, as the hosts scored seven runs, on nine hits, with one error and Dubuque plated two runs, on four hits, with four errors. Freshman pitcher
Danielle Schmidt (5-3) worked seven innings to earn the victory. She allowed two runs, on four hits, with four walks and five strikeouts. Freshman
Suzanne Teuben was 2-for-3, with a run driven in.
Lesley Guenard and Munoz each went 2-for-4, with two runs scored.
Dubuque scored a run in the top of the first inning, but Wheaton countered with two run in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-1 lead. Griffith and
Amanda Mattocks each drove in a run in the inning to give the hosts the lead. Dubuque scored a run in the top of the third inning to tie the game at 2-2.
Teuben hit a RBI-single in the fourth inning to give Wheaton a 3-2 advantage. Wheaton plated four more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning as Griffith, Mattocks and Chrans each drove in a run in the four-run inning for the hosts.
