Thunder softball team splits a twinbill with Benedictine

– The Thunder softball team split a doubleheader with Benedictine University on Monday afternoon at Ruth Leedy Field. The Eagles won the opener 1-0 and Wheaton took the nightcap, 14-7. Wheaton is now 9-5 on the season, while Benedictine is 8-3 this season. The Thunder will return to action on Wednesday at 3 PM with a non-conference doubleheader at Beloit College.

Benedictine took the opener, 1-0 as the guests scored one run, on six hits, and Wheaton scored no runs on three hits. Neither team committed an error in the game. Both teams used superb pitching in the game as the Eagles scored the winning run in the top of the fourth inning and held on for the narrow victory.

Wheaton sophomore pitcher Ainsley McCullough (6-2) took the loss in seven innings of work. McCullough allowed one run, as she scattered six hits, with two strikeouts. Lesley Guenard, Amanda Mattocks and Lauren Griffith each hit singles to account for Wheaton's three hits in the game.

Wheaton's offense took hold in the second game as Wheaton earned the 14-7 victory. The Thunder scored 14 runs, on 17 hits, with one error and Benedictine plated seven runs, on nine hits, with three errors. Thunder starting pitcher Danielle Schmidt (2-3) earned the victory in 5-2/3 innings of work as she allowed seven runs, on nine hits, with two strikeouts. McCullough received the save in 1-1/3 innings of relief as she held the Eagles hitless and allowed no runs.

Senior Adrienne Munoz was 2-for-4, with a double, a walk and two stolen bases as she scored three runs and drove in three. Guenard was 2-for-3, with a double and two steals, as she drove in three runs and scored a run. Christine Williams was 2-for-2, with a double in the game. Freshman catcher Suzanne Teuben was 2-for-3, with a double, two RBI and a run.

Benedictine scored a run in each of the first two innings to take an early 2-0 lead. Wheaton scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 3-2 lead. Teuben hit a RBI-double and Munoz added a RBI-single in the inning to help the hosts gain the advantage. Wheaton added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend its lead to 7-2 as Munoz and Guenard each hit RBI-doubles and Mattock added a RBI-single in the game.

Guenard and Williams each hit RBI-singles in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Thunder scored two more runs to increase the hosts' lead to 9-2. Benedictine plated five runs in the top of the sixth inning to cut Wheaton's lead to 9-7. However, Wheaton added five more runs in the bottom of the sixth as the 'Orange and Blue' secured the victory with RBI-doubles by Williams and Katie Iser.
