The Wheaton softball team sweeps a doubleheader at Concordia-Chicago

– The Wheaton softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader at Concordia-Chicago on Wednesday afternoon. Wheaton won the first game 5-1 and picked up a 3-2 victory in game two, as the Thunder extended its winning streak to five games. Wheaton will return to action on Saturday with a doubleheader at Lake Forest College.

Wheaton won Wednesday's opener, 5-1, as the Thunder scored five runs, on four hits and committed no errors, while Concordia scored one run, on four hits, with three errors. Sophomore pitcher Ainsley McCullough earned the win in seven innings of work. McCullough allowed one run, on four hits, with six strikeouts. Sophomore Lesley Guenard was 2-for-3 at the plate and sophomore Amanda Mattocks drove in three runs in the victory.

Wheaton broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 3-0 lead. Mattocks, Megan Chrans and Lauren Griffith each drove in a run in the inning. Wheaton extended its lead to 5-0 in the top of the fifth inning as Mattocks hit a two-run single. The Cougars scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Wheaton won the second game, 3-2. Wheaton scored three runs, on six hits, with no errors and Concordia scored two runs, on four hits and committed two errors. Freshman pitcher Danielle Schmidt started the game for the Thunder, working 3-2/3 innings. Schmidt allowed one run, on two hits, with one strikeout. McCullough (6-1) earned the victory in 3-1/3 innings of relief as she allowed one run, on two hits.

Wheaton scored all three of its runs in the top of the third inning. Katie Iser scored the first run, on a Concordia error. A RBI-single by Griffith drove home Mattocks, and the third run of the inning scored on a RBI-ground out by Guenard that brought Chrans across the plate. Concordia scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning and added another run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the guests' lead to 3-2; however, the Cougars could get no closer.
