Abilene, Texas - After 120 minutes and 11 rounds of penalty kicks, the Wheaton College women's soccer team ended its season with a 1-1 tie vs. Emory University in the NCAA Sectional Semifinal (Round 3) on Friday. Emory took the penalty kick shootout round 9-8 and advances to the next round of the NCAA Tournament.

The No. 5-ranked Thunder end the year with a 20-2-2 record. The No. 7-ranked Eagles are now 16-1-3 and will face Hardin-Simmons University at 1:00 PM on Saturday in the Elite 8.

Wheaton struck first early in the first period to get on the board. A short corner by Katelyn Kishkunas served the ball into the box, where Laura Karsten knocked in the shot at 6:15 into the match.

The Thunder stifled the Eagles' offense in the first half, leading in shots 5-2 and keeping the pressure on with nine corner kicks. But at 21:39 into the match, a loose ball in the box found the foot of Sara Belsole, who notched the equalizer.

Emory pressed its attack in the second half with nine shots. However, neither team could get the go-ahead score through regulation or both overtimes. The game ended officially in a tie, which meant a penalty kick shootout would decide who moved on to the next round of the NCAA Tournament.

Both squads matched each other back and forth in the shootout, eventually reaching the 11th round of kickers. Emory made its final kick after a Wheaton miss to end the game.

The Eagles held a 17-11 shot advantage and an 11-10 corner kick edge. Thunder goalkeeper Hillary Barreto allowed one goal while making seven saves in all 110 minutes. Emory goalie tandem of Erica Stein and Kaele Leonard combined for four saves and one goal allowed.
