Men's soccer extends its win streak to five with a 4-2 victory against Augustana

Wheaton, Ill.
– The Thunder men's soccer team extended its winning streak to five matches on Wednesday night with a solid 4-2 victory against Augustana (6-9-1/2-2-0). Wheaton remains undefeated in conference play with tonight's win to move to 5-0 in CCIW play and 7-6-3 overall. The Thunder will travel to Wisconsin-Platteville on Friday night for a 7 PM match against the Pioneers.

Augustana's Matt Shipon gave the guest a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute when he blasted a free kick into the net. The score remained a 1-0 lead for the rest of the first half. A little more than 10 minutes into the second half freshman Jordan Golz dumped the ball off to his brother Drew Golz, a Wheaton junior, and Drew blasted the ball past Augustana netminder Tyler Cowherd to tie the match at 1-1 in the 56th minute. Wheaton gained the lead in the 60th minute when Dan Pavlak scored off of a Josh Clark corner kick, giving Wheaton its first lead of the match at 2-1. In the 66th minute, Drew Golz took the ball following a boot from goalkeeper Ryan Seager and moved his way past the Viking defense to put the ball in the back of the net for a 3-1 Wheaton. Jason Lollar netted his second goal of the year in the 80th minute to, thanks to a Paul Pesek assist to increase Wheaton's lead to 4-1. Inside the final minute of the match, Augustana was awarded a penalty kick that was saved by Wheaton netminder Ryan Seager, however, the Vikings' Nick Wolfe collected the rebound and put the ball into the net to account for the 4-2 final score.

Wheaton controlled the pace of the match with a 23-6 edge in shots, including a 10-3 edge in shots on goal. Wheaton had seven corner kicks on the night and Augustana had three. Seager made one save and allowed two goals. Cowherd made six saves and allowed four goals for the Vikings.
