Women's basketball falls at 11th-ranked Carthage, 69-52

– The Thunder women's basketball team opened the conference portion of its schedule on Tuesday night at 11th-ranked Carthage College. The Lady Reds used a strong second half performance to top the Thunder 69-52. Wheaton is now 6-5 overall and 0-1 in CCIW play, while Carthage is 11-1 on the season and 1-0 in league action. Wheaton will host North Central on Saturday afternoon at 2 PM in King Arena.

Carthage led the Thunder led the Thunder 32-21 with 1:50 remaining in the first half when the Thunder put together an 8-0 scoring run before halftime for a 32-29 Lady Reds lead at halftime. The hosts came out of the locker room at halftime and put together a 17-2 scoring run over a span of 9:35 to take a 49-31 lead with 11:25 left in regulation. Carthage's lead would bulge to as much as 23 points late in the second half as the Lady Reds' strong second half gave the hosts the victory.

Sophomore Lindsey Brenneman scored 16 points, with three three-pointers to lead the Thunder offense tonight. Junior Annie Bowen scored 10 points, with five rebounds and three assists. Freshmen Breanna Bohlen and Jennifer Lee each scored eight points on the night, as Bohlen distributed a team-high four assists. Kelly Brooks gathered a team-high six rebounds and Elisabeth Potts grabbed five boards.

Rosie Dorn led Carthage with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Cailee Corcoran scored 12 points and Heather Gilmore registered 10 points with six rebounds for the hosts.

Wheaton shot a 31.4% (16-51) field goal percentage, with 36.4% (8-22) from the three-point range and 63.2% (12-19) at the free throw line. Carthage shot 40.6% (26-64) from the field, with 20% (3-15) from behind the three-point arc, with an 82.4% (14-17) effort at the charity stripe. Carthage out-rebounded the Thunder 45-33, with a 14-8 edge on the offensive glass.
