BOXSCORE
Wheaton, Ill. - The Wheaton College men's basketball team earned a dramatic 66-65 victory against #17-ranked Illinois Wesleyan on Wednesday night in King Arena. The Titans led 65-64 with four-seconds left in the game when Thunder senior
Ben Panner took a shot that fell short of the basket and was collected by junior
Andrew Jahns who put the ball through the hoop as time expired for the Wheaton victory. It was the fourth time this season Wheaton made a basket as time expired to tie or win a game.
The Thunder led 64-58 with 43-seconds left in the game when Titan
Doug Sexauer scored a basket to cut Wheaton's lead to 64-60. Wheaton turned the ball over on its next possession and the Titans'
Jordan Zimmer was fouled and made two free throws to cut Wheaton's lead to 64-62 with 23-seconds remaining. A Thunder turnover on the hosts' next possession gave the Titans the ball back. Illinois Wesleyan's
Sean Johnson hit a three-pointer with 11-seconds left to give the guests their first lead of the second half at 65-64 to setup Jahns' dramatic put-back.
Sophomore forward
Tim McCrary led Wheaton with a game-high 31 points on 13-of-19 shooting from the field. McCrary also collected a game-high 12 rebounds and added four assists, with three blocked shots. Panner added 14 points for the hosts. Jahns scored six points with five rebounds.
Thunder head coach
Mike Schauer noted afterwards, “I was thrilled with our team's effort and their commitment to keep competing after a difficult loss last Saturday.” Schauer added, “Tim [McCrary] continues to be sensational, he carried us at times. The Thunder mentor concluded, “
Andrew Jahns has made those types of plays at the end of the game in the three years he has been here. The reason he is able to make those kinds of plays is because he never quits on a play.”
Sexauer led Illinois Wesleyan with 23 points and six rebounds. Edmond O'Callaghan scored 10 points, with six rebounds and Sean Dwyer also added 10 points.
Wheaton shot 48% (24-50) from the field, with 50% (4-8) from three-point range and 77.8% (14-18) at the free throw line. Illinois Wesleyan posted a 41% (25-61) field goal percentage, with 33.3% (5-15) at the three-point line and 62.5% (10-16) at the charity stripe. The Titans out-rebounded Wheaton 33-32, with a 14-8 edge on the offensive glass.
